About This Mask
The plague doctor mask — with its characteristic long beak, dark leather, and glass-eyed stare — has transcended its grim historical origins to become one of the most immediately recognisable and visually arresting masks in the costume world. It works at Halloween, Renaissance Faires, masquerades, steampunk events, and conventions. It photographs brilliantly. And when it's made properly — as an actual craft object rather than a moulded plastic novelty — it commands genuine presence.
Heidi's plague doctor mask is made from a combination of Worbla thermoplastic (for the structure and beak form) and genuine or high-quality faux leather (for the face covering), with glass-effect lenses and hand-applied finishing. Each mask is an individual construction — not moulded from a generic form — which means minor variations exist between pieces as a natural result of handcraft.
Construction Process
The beak is the centrepiece of the construction — the characteristic long, downward-curving form that makes the mask instantly recognisable. Heidi builds the beak structure from Worbla over an EVA foam core, shaped to the correct historical proportions (plague doctor masks were not uniform in the historical record, but there's a recognisable silhouette that reads as correct), then finished with multiple layers of paint and sealant in the chosen colorway.
The face covering is cut from leather and shaped to follow the face contours, with the lens openings cut and fitted with round glass-effect lenses. The full mask assembly is fitted with an adjustable strap system — a double-strap arrangement that distributes the mask's weight evenly and allows precise fit adjustment. The system accommodates head circumferences from approximately 52cm to 64cm.
Colour Options
The standard version is finished in aged black with antique hardware effects — the classic plague doctor aesthetic. Alternative colour options include aged brown (more leather-accurate to the historical form), dark red (more theatrical), and grey-green (more creature-feature territory). Contact to discuss your preferred colorway; custom finishing is available.
Wearability
The mask is designed for convention and event wear — wearable for several hours with appropriate breaks. The field of vision through the glass-effect lenses is limited compared to no mask, which is typical for masked costumes of this type; take time to familiarise yourself with wearing it before the event. The beak length makes it unsuitable for eating and drinking without removing the mask.
Frequently Asked Questions
The lenses are polycarbonate rounds with a glass-effect finish — they read as glass in photographs and in person but are shatter-resistant for safe wear.
The mask is designed for extended convention wear — several hours of continuous wear is reasonable. Build in breaks for comfort and to check fit throughout the day.
The round lenses provide a full forward field of vision. Peripheral vision is somewhat limited by the mask structure, which is typical for masked costumes. Familiarise yourself with wearing it before the event.

Yes — the construction is weather-resistant. Avoid prolonged rain exposure; the leather facing and sealant are water-resistant but not waterproof.
No — the beak makes eating and drinking impractical without removing the mask. Plan accordingly for events with food and drink.
