The Challenge
Jessica Rabbit's iconic red dress presents a specific set of construction challenges: the extreme off-shoulder silhouette, the high slit, the structured bodice that must maintain shape while allowing movement, and the deep red colour that photographs differently under every lighting condition. Heidi's approach began with a full pattern draft from measurements rather than modifying an existing pattern — the proportions of the dress are too specific to adapt reliably.
Materials
The main fabric is a heavy stretch velvet in a deep crimson red, chosen for its drape and its ability to hold the structured bodice shape while remaining flexible enough for the slit and train. The bodice is boned with spiral steel boning to maintain the off-shoulder line without requiring constant adjustment. The skirt features a built-in petticoat layer to maintain the correct silhouette through the hip before the slit opening.
The Result
The finished costume accurately captures the theatrical proportions of the original character while remaining wearable for a full convention day. The structured bodice provides genuine support; the train is weighted to flow correctly during movement. This remains one of Heidi's most-requested costumes and a benchmark build in the portfolio.
