How to Care for Your Corset

A well-cared-for corset lasts decades. Here's how to do it right.

Airing Out

Corsets should be aired out after each wear rather than stored immediately. Hang or lay flat in a well-ventilated area for several hours after wearing — this allows moisture from wear to evaporate before the corset is stored. Storing a damp corset promotes mildew growth in the fabric and can cause rusting of steel boning.

Spot Cleaning

Most corsets should not be immersed in water — the steel boning will rust if wet and not dried thoroughly, and the interlining can distort. Spot clean the outer fabric with a damp cloth and mild soap. For persistent staining, consult a specialist dry cleaner who has experience with structured garments.

Lace Care

The lacing cord takes significant stress during wear and will eventually need replacement. Store the corset with the laces loosened entirely — storing tightly laced compresses the boning channels and shortens the corset's life. Periodically inspect the lacing for fraying, particularly at the loop end and at the grommets.

Steel Boning

If your corset gets wet, remove all moisture immediately and allow it to dry thoroughly in a warm (not hot) location before storage. If boning begins to rust through the fashion fabric, this indicates the corset has been stored damp — the boning channels can be carefully opened and the boning replaced by a specialist.
