Using a Dress Form for Cosplay Construction

The tool that changes everything about how you build.

Why a Dress Form?

A dress form set to your measurements is a tireless fitting model that's always available, never needs a break, and doesn't require you to twist to see your own back seam. For costume construction, it provides a way to check fit and silhouette at every stage of construction — something that's otherwise only possible through multiple fittings on the actual person. The time savings and quality improvement are significant.

Choosing a Dress Form

For general costume construction: a professional adjustable form (Dritz or Uniquely You style) that can be padded to your specific measurements is the most practical choice. These adjust at the bust, waist, hip, and back length to match a range of measurements. For corset work and fitted bodice construction: a padded, non-adjustable form set specifically to your measurements produces more accurate results than adjustable forms, which don't replicate specific torso shapes precisely.

Padding to Your Measurements

Most dress forms need to be padded to match your specific measurements. Use batting or commercial dress-form padding in layers, building up to your bust, waist, and hip measurements and checking with a tape measure at each stage. Cover the final padding layer in a knit fabric for a clean surface. The resulting form matches your body well enough that garments fitted on it will transfer to your body correctly.
