What SFX Makeup Covers
Special effects makeup for cosplay includes character-accurate makeup application (recreating a character's specific colouring and features), prosthetics and latex applications (scars, wounds, creature features), body paint, and ageing/transformation techniques. The entry point is character makeup; prosthetics and body paint are more advanced applications that require specific materials and skills.
Essential Products
Start with: a good primer (Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion is the cosplay standard), a full coverage foundation in your base shade, setting powder and setting spray, a comprehensive eyeshadow palette that includes mattes in multiple skin-adjacent tones, and a quality set of brushes. Body paint requires specific water-activated body paints (Mehron, Kryolan) rather than face paint or acrylic paint — the latter are not safe for skin.
Character Accuracy
Study your character's specific colouring — eye shape, eyebrow shape, lip colour, any character-specific markings. Anime characters often have highly specific eye shapes that require careful liner work to replicate. Practice the makeup in advance and test it for longevity — convention lighting is often very warm and very bright, and what looks good at home may look different under convention conditions.
Skin Safety
Always patch test new products on a small area before full application, especially products not specifically formulated for skin. Remove all makeup thoroughly after wear — leaving heavy product on skin overnight causes breakouts and irritation. Use a dedicated makeup remover designed for the product type before washing with your regular cleanser.
