Crafting Horns, Ears & Creature Features

The details that make a fantasy creature character — here's how to make them.

Horns

Rigid horns: Worbla shaped over an EVA foam core, or directly over an armature wire core for smaller horns. The core determines the horn's profile; the Worbla provides the surface for detailing and painting. Attach to a headband or directly to a wig base. Heavier horns benefit from a distribution headpiece rather than a single attachment point.

Foam clay horns: air-dry foam clay sculpted by hand produces organic, irregular horn forms that work well for non-geometric creature designs. Sand and paint after drying.

Ears

Flat ear shapes (elven ears, cat ears) work well in craft foam with a wire channel for shape. The wire allows the ear to hold a specific angle and curve. Attach over or integrated into a wig for the most natural result. Standalone headband ears are simpler but look less integrated.

Tails and Extensions

Fabric tails: a fabric tube stuffed with fibrefill or with a wire armature for poses. The wire allows styling the tail in specific positions for photography. Attach to a separate waistband that goes under the costume for a secure, adjustable attachment.
