Convention Prop Policies
Every convention has a weapons and prop policy — read it before you arrive. Most conventions apply a "peace bonding" requirement to prop weapons (visible, brightly coloured tie or ribbon that identifies the item as a prop). Props that could cause injury if mishandled are typically prohibited regardless of bonding. No real weapons, no functional blades, no projectile props that actually fire. Check the specific convention's policy for their exact rules.
Heat Management
Convention spaces can be extremely warm — the combination of an enclosed space, large crowds, convention lighting, and a costume that covers most of your body creates significant heat stress risk. Know the warning signs of overheating. Identify cooling stations in the convention space. Plan breaks from your costume, especially if it covers your head or neck. Carry water and drink it regularly.
Weight and Wearability
Heavy armour pieces, large wings, and elevated footwear all affect balance and movement in ways that aren't apparent until you've been wearing them for four hours. Test the full weight of your costume before the event. Identify anything that creates strain or instability and address it before the convention, not during.
