Making Cosplay Accessories — From Scratch

The accessories are often what make a character immediately recognisable. Here's how to make them.

Identifying Signature Accessories

For most characters, there are two or three accessories that immediately identify the character to anyone who knows them. These are the accessories worth constructing from scratch: the Log Pose for Nami, the crown and trident for Ariel, the keyblade for Sora. Identify these early and budget time and materials accordingly — they often require more work than initially apparent.

Materials for Accessories

Small detailed accessories typically use different materials than large armour pieces. Common options: polymer clay for small sculpted elements; Worbla pellets or small pieces for rigid detailed shapes; craft wire for structural elements in headpieces; resin casting for pieces requiring multiple copies or very fine detail; fabric-wrapped wire for soft accessories with structure.

Finishing Accessories

Accessories are often the most closely examined elements of a costume — people look at them at close range. Surface finishing quality matters more here than on large armour pieces viewed from a distance. Multiple thin layers of paint, patience with sanding between coats, and careful final detailing produce professional-quality accessory finishes.
